Scissor Complete!

we finished it just in time

i didn’t get to take any photos at the Bazaar, (maybe i’ll ask around and see if any of our members did)

so these are some much belated (and self-indulgent) photos of the scissor

WHACHAAAAAH!

Painting

So we didn’t start painting the darn thing until just before the Activity Bazaar

image

we started gessoing this sucker 2 nights before and man am i glad we started that early because there were spots where it refused to dry! (we got pretty impatient and whipped out the hairdryer… this may or may not have been the first time i used my hairdryer in the 3 years that i’ve had it with me at college)

thank goodness the gesso really filled in the porous foam!

image

we painted about 3 or 4 coats until the exposed foam bits were appropriately smooth then started the painting

(also someone made a How to Train Your Dragon Shield we don’t know who but you can see it on the table in the picture below)

image

we bought some sick! glossy red spray paint and sprayed down into the scissor holes (super convenient) and once that dried we could prop the scissor up with dowels supported by my mighty music history tomes and a few japanese language text books

image

go gene go!

now we could spray both sides at once for maximum efficiency and not have to worry about screwing up the coat of paint on one side or the other

Scissor Progress

so i could upload the finished scissor blade…

or i could continue to upload the progress images for any one who might be interested in the method

at this point in time we realized that as busy as the 2 of us were we couldn’t finish Ryuko’s AND Nui’s blade before the Activity Bazaar in 5 days so we joined forces to finish Ryuko’s (we were gonna use the blade as a recruiting tool to lure unsuspecting prospective students into our college’s anime club)

this was after a few looooong days of hardcore sanding… we literally sanded until it got dark and the street light came on

we were pretty geeked up now that the scissor had some dimension to it and wasn’t just a plank of foam

it was also really really cold and i couldn’t actually feel my fingers

now all that was left a little cleaning of the edges then some gesso and paint woot woot

Scissor!

so my friend and i decided on a lark to make some scissor blades from kill la kill

(i may upload my templates later)

i made my own template for nui’s blade and edited this kid’s beautiful template for ryuko’s blade (which has since been revamped, is a lot cleaner and now has 2 nui blades check it out), then we laser cut them out of foam board, glued them together, and now we’re sanding
